Now my next big project is getting my mailing list set up. I know, I know, mailing lists are so annoying, but the good news is, this one will come with short stories. I’ve got three completed and two uncompleted short stories featuring Walter is a variety of precarious predicaments. There is a theme to the five stories which I’m looking forward to seeing who spots it first, and I’m planning on releasing them, about half a story at a time, through my mailing list. I know, I know, I’ve been terrible about finishing it up, but this time, it’s official: as soon as I get final approval from whoever it is that amazon has do this stuff, Curdled Cuisine will be available. The cover gave me no end of trouble, mostly because I have no artistic skills, but it’s finally done.
I swear, it’s on its way.
And, after I take care of a few personal matters, I hope to start work on book four in… like… two or three months. So, who knows how long it will be until Delicious Detritus hits the market.
I’ve got a couple of short stories centering around Walter and his ilk that I will be making available over the coming months. Please keep coming back here so I can tell you how to get your hands on them. I have to say, I’m very pleased with how they’ve been turning out.
The book is done. It may have an error or two still in it, but dammit, I’m tired of looking. All I need now is to make the cover and format the book.

So close I can taste it. Unfortunately, I’m a crappy artist. This may take a few days.
So, Curdled Cuisine has been sent to three beta readers. I took a couple of risks on a couple of scenes, and I’m hoping that the payout will be worth the cost on them, but I’m holding out judgment until I get all three critiques back. There’s a chance that I’ll have to do some major rewriting on the project, but at the moment I’m hopeful that the scenes in question will play out well, and I’ll be able to do one last minor round of edits in November. In the meantime, I’m working on a short story collection associated with the Corpse-Eater Saga, and I’m about to start work on book four, Delicious Detritus.
In related news, a friend and I are working on some promotional plans that are scheduled to coincide with the release of book 3. The short version is that I’ll be making book 1 available for free for a while. Ideally this will translate directly to people becoming fans and getting the second and third book, but, at the very least, I’m hoping to increase the number of book reviews on Amazon. I don’t really get how Amazon works, but according to people who understand all of that better than I do, the more reviews a book gets, the more likely it is to show up as a suggested book to people who might otherwise never hear about it.
Anyhow, that’s what’s going on in my world. I hope everyone out there in the world is doing well!
So, one of the hardest parts about trying to ‘make it’ as an author is promotion. It is an unfortunate fact that, no matter how good your writing is, you can’t do it for a living if you can’t get people to buy it. And that means promoting yourself. Unfortunately, for many, if not most artists, ‘sales’ is contrary to our very nature.
A friend of mine, also an author (Jason Richter, look him up!) has a plan that seems like it won’t be nearly as painful as most self promotion techniques. It is a multi-step plan which will start right about the time I release Curdled Cuisine.
I look forward to sharing more about it once I actually start, but for right now the part that I’m working on is a series of short stories. I haven’t done a lot of short story writing in the last couple of years, so I have to ask: if I’m sending out short stories or serialized short stories to people’s e-mails once a month, how long is too long, and how short is too short?
It’s official: the first draft of Curdled Cuisine is done! I’m still a ways away from publication, obviously. I have to give it a round of edits, give it to the beta readers to tear apart, give it another round of edits, make the cover and format it, but… well the first draft is done, and that’s a pretty big step.
At this point it’s very tentative, but I’m hoping I can get the Corpse-Eater Saga, book three, out in early 2019. Fingers crossed!
I just mapped out book three of the Corpse-Eater saga, and I have to say, this book feels like it’s going to be pretty damned full! I’ve got plots, sub-plots, scenes for overarching plots… I’m introducing a character or two who will be pretty damned important down the road.
I’ve got to admit, I’m excited about this one! Quite a range of emotions are going to play out over the course of this book, and a few things I’ve invested in throughout the first two books are going to pay off here.
I also had something of an epiphany recently. I figured out how I want to series to end. Originally I just wanted to run through my contract with Winlock and see how I felt, but I figured out a couple of things today. I think I may have to go to twelve or fifteen books to get to where I want to be, but I know where I want the story to end, and I really think I can make it all the way to that moment.
In fairness, I’m saying this as I start work on book three. By the time I get to, let’s say, book seven, I’ll probably be groaning and whining constantly as I beg for the end of the series to come. That’s not based on anything I know about the series, just the fact that I’ve never gotten to the end of book three in any series I’ve started writing yet. Then again, I never had a publisher want to print anything I wrote before, so we’re in a whole new ballpark here!
